Chicago-based performance footwear company Stria Sport is shaking up the pickleball industry by injecting basketball-inspired sneaker culture and bold aesthetics into a market traditionally dominated by tennis-style designs. By prioritizing athlete input and lifestyle appeal, the brand is positioning its flagship G1 Pro shoe as a performance-first product that refuses to sacrifice style.
The Performance and Design Philosophy of the G1 Pro
Stria’s entry into the sport began when they noticed pickleball players were already gravitating toward their basketball shoes for the superior ankle support and locked-in feel. To formalize this, they collaborated with pro Gabe Tardio to develop the G1 Pro, a shoe engineered specifically for the unique demands of the court. The brand emphasizes that while they prioritize the "cool factor," they remain committed to the technical requirements of the sport. The G1 Pro is built with the following performance features:
- Wide supportive base: Designed to provide a stable foundation for the rapid lateral movements and quick cuts required in high-level pickleball.
- Internal heel cup: Included to enhance rear-foot stability and prevent slippage during intense rallies.
- Impact-absorbing foam: Engineered to provide cushioning that protects the athlete's joints during long sessions on the court.
- Added ankle support: A carryover from the brand's basketball heritage, providing extra security for the wearer during multidirectional movement.
- Breathable mesh: Utilized to keep the foot cool and comfortable throughout extended periods of play.
Beyond the technical specs, Stria is attempting to change how pickleball gear is marketed by treating its athletes as partners rather than just billboards. This includes giving players like Gabe Tardio direct input into their own signature models—a practice common in the NBA but rare in pickleball. Furthermore, the brand has brought in NBA All-Star Andre Drummond as an equity owner and creative director to oversee product design and athlete partnerships. This strategy is rounded out by the recent addition of pro Danni-Elle Townsend, who represents the brand's focus on younger, style-conscious players.
The brand recently showcased this vision at a "Crossover" event in Fort Lauderdale, which featured a mix of pickleball pros, NFL star Jarvis Landry, and rapper Riff Raff. This event served as a physical manifestation of Stria’s goal: to prove that pickleball footwear can be a cultural statement rather than just utilitarian equipment. This commitment to aesthetics is currently highlighted by the release of the new "Glacier" colorway for the $130 G1 Pro, which maintains the core performance platform while offering a fresh, modern look for the court.
