Padel at the Pub has officially launched its flagship location at The Black Horse in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, marking a unique fusion of the world’s fastest-growing racket sport and traditional British hospitality. By installing two padel courts on the pub grounds, the venture aims to transform the local boozer into a comprehensive social destination where sport and dining intersect.
The Padel at the Pub Concept
The core philosophy behind this initiative is to leverage underutilized outdoor space to create a vibrant community hub. According to owner Sam Schroder, the model is designed to encourage players to linger after their matches, effectively turning a quick game into a full social outing. The site offers several key features and amenities to support this integrated experience:
- Extended Operating Hours: The courts are accessible to the public daily from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, providing ample flexibility for players to schedule matches around their work or personal lives.
- The Padel Café: Located on-site, this dedicated café operates daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, offering a convenient menu of breakfast, lunch, and refreshments for players looking to refuel before or after their court time.
- Comprehensive Programming: To foster a sense of community, the venue plans to host a variety of activities, including organized social games, professional coaching sessions, competitive leagues, and various tournaments and events.
- Hospitality Integration: Beyond the café, players are encouraged to utilize the main pub facilities and its large garden area. The venue also allows players to book tables inside The Black Horse for full meals, bridging the gap between athletic activity and dining.
- Community-Focused Business Model: The flagship site serves as a blueprint for the wider Padel at the Pub Group, demonstrating how pubs can generate new income streams while attracting diverse groups, including families, local residents, school groups, and local businesses.
The launch event at The Black Horse celebrated this marriage of sport and social life with a full day of court access, live music, and food and drink offerings. By combining the physical activity of padel with the established social infrastructure of a pub, the project aims to introduce the sport to a new generation while revitalizing the traditional community pub experience.
