The Icons Padel League is set to launch its inaugural season in Manchester this autumn, introducing a franchise-based competition modeled after the high-stakes auction format of the Indian Premier League. This new professional circuit aims to elevate padel as a spectator sport by combining live team rivalries with a digital-first approach to broadcasting.
League Structure and Player Categories
The league will feature six founding franchises, each constructed during a live Auction Night scheduled for late September. To ensure a balance of skill and star power, each team will be built around a specific hierarchy of talent. The league categorizes its participants into three distinct tiers:
- Icons: These are the top-ranked professional players who serve as the anchor for each franchise. LTA No.1 Josep Aymerich has already been confirmed as one of the marquee players for the opening season.
- Captains: These individuals are the top-ranked regional players who provide leadership and tactical depth to the team rosters.
- Squad Players: Following the selection of Icons and Captains, franchise owners will bid in real-time to fill the remainder of their rosters from an open pool of players, categorized by skill levels including elite, advanced, and intermediate.
The competition will span seven weeks in total, consisting of five weeks of group-stage matches followed by two weeks of finals. The season will culminate in a ticketed Grand Final in October, where the top-performing teams will compete for a shared cash prize pool.
A core pillar of the Icons Padel League is its commitment to digital accessibility and entertainment. By partnering with one of the UK’s largest TikTok agencies, the league plans to broadcast all matches live across TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Co-founder Wasim Riley emphasized that the league was designed from the ground up as a content-driven product, aiming to attract a broad audience beyond the existing padel community. Following the conclusion of the Manchester debut, the organization intends to expand the franchise model to additional locations across the United Kingdom in future seasons.
