Great Britain’s senior padel teams recently concluded their FIP Senior World Cup campaign, showcasing resilience and improved performances on the international stage. Both the men’s and women’s squads navigated challenging group stages and travel conditions to secure respectable final rankings against elite global competition.
Tournament Performance and Key Results
The British men’s team finished the tournament in joint 17th place after a competitive group stage against Spain, Germany, and Egypt. While they faced a difficult 5-0 loss to Spain and a narrow 3-2 defeat to Germany, they dominated Egypt with a 5-0 sweep to secure third in their group. The women’s squad achieved a 13th-place finish overall, highlighted by a remarkable comeback victory against Germany and a strong group stage showing that included a win over Belgium and a clean sweep against Ecuador.
The success of the GB squads was built on several standout performances and tactical victories throughout the event:
- Men’s Victory over Canada: The team secured a 3-2 win in a tense five-match tie. Key contributors included Ben Gudzelak and Javier Etayo Fernandez (7-5, 6-3), Michael Tolman and James Southwood (6-0, 6-2), and Christopher Warren and Michael Thorpe (6-0, 6-1).
- Women’s Comeback against Germany: After falling behind 2-0, the women’s team rallied to win three consecutive matches to seal the tie. The decisive victories came from Helen Crook and Victoria Davies (6-2, 6-3), Sally Fisher and Teresa Catlin (6-1, 6-4), and Ashley Mears and Rosemary Dennis (6-0, 6-0).
- Logistical Resilience: GB men’s captain Drew Warren noted that the squad overcame significant physical hurdles, including 17-hour flights and daily hour-long commutes to the venue, all while adjusting to new court conditions.
- Competitive Spirit: Despite the high level of play, the team maintained strong morale. A notable moment of grit occurred when the over-55 pair pushed their opponents to a third-set tie-break, narrowly losing 11-9 after trailing 9-6.
Reflecting on the campaign, Captain Drew Warren expressed pride in the team's progress, noting that their 17th-place finish represented an improvement over the previous year's World Championships. Beyond the team’s own efforts, Warren highlighted the opportunity to witness world-class padel firsthand, specifically praising the performance of Argentine legends Miguel Lamperti and Agustin Gomez Silingo, whose team ultimately claimed the men's trophy.
