Partnering with Alonso Moreno Muñoz, the Nottingham-based teenager navigated the competition without dropping a single set, further cementing his status as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.
Tournament Dominance and European Ranking
Phillips’ performance in Egypt was a display of consistency and skill, as he and Muñoz cruised through the early stages of the tournament before facing a stern test in the final. His path to the title included the following results:
- Round of 16: The duo opened their campaign with a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory.
- Quarter-finals: They continued their momentum with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win.
- Semi-finals: The pair reached the final after a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
- Final: Facing their toughest challenge of the event, Phillips and Muñoz secured a 7-6, 7-5 win, clinching the title after a hard-fought tie-break in the first set and a tight second set.
This victory marks Phillips' third title on the FIP Promises tour. As a result of his success in Egypt, he has climbed 17 places in the rankings, making him the 10th highest-rated under-18 male player in Europe. Reflecting on the win, Phillips noted that while the early rounds were straightforward, the final required significant mental fortitude to overcome challenging environmental conditions and high-quality opponents.
Despite his success on the international youth circuit, Phillips admitted to feeling disappointment over missing out on a spot in the Great Britain men’s squad for the FIP World Cup European qualifiers in Madrid. He followed the team's progress closely via social media, watching their matches against Germany. Rather than dwelling on the exclusion, the teenager is using the experience as motivation to secure a place in the squad for future events.
Looking ahead, Phillips is shifting his focus to domestic competition. His immediate schedule includes participating in the National Championships and several tournaments within the UK.
