CenterLine 33, a former 16-screen movie theater in Rohnert Park, California, has been reimagined as a premier 74,000-square-foot pickleball destination. By blending luxury amenities with the nostalgic architecture of the original cinema, the facility has become a standout venue for players seeking a unique, high-end environment.
The Transformation of CenterLine 33
Led by local developer Richard Coombs and a group of investors, the project involved a $7 million renovation to convert the shuttered Reading Cinemas into a state-of-the-art sports club. The facility, which opened in January, derives its name from its total of 33 courts: 16 outdoor lighted courts and 17 indoor courts. The club has successfully preserved the building's cinematic character while integrating modern athletic features.
The club offers several distinct features that set it apart from traditional indoor pickleball facilities:
- Private Indoor Courts: Eleven of the indoor courts are fully enclosed by walls reaching the 20-foot ceiling. This design eliminates distractions from adjacent games, prevents stray balls from entering the court, and allows players to communicate without shouting over background noise.
- Refurbished Stadium Seating: To enhance the spectator experience, the club installed 350 refurbished rocking movie theater seats along the sidelines. The two designated "championship courts" feature elevated stadium seating, creating a high-energy atmosphere for tournament play.
- The Kitchen Concession Stand: Paying homage to the building's history, the lobby features a concession area named "The Kitchen," which serves health-conscious food options for members.
- Second-Floor Viewing Gallery: The space formerly occupied by movie projection rooms has been converted into a social area with windows overlooking the courts, providing a bird's-eye view of the action.
- Integrated Wellness and Training: Beyond the courts, the club functions as a health facility. It includes dedicated space for strength and conditioning training, as well as a wellness spa and lounge for recovery and massage services.
- Strategic Programming: Under the guidance of General Manager Marc Philobos, the club focuses on specialized athletic programming designed to help members improve their performance and fitness levels.
The venue has earned high praise from the pickleball community, including NBA legend Rick Barry, who noted that he has never seen a facility with such unique architecture. By combining the social appeal of a theater with the functional needs of a high-performance sports club, CenterLine 33 is positioning itself as a model for the future of indoor pickleball venues.
