After a year of rigorous development and multiple design iterations, pickleball paddle brand 11SIX24 is set to enter the footwear market with a new shoe designed specifically for the sport. Founder David Groechel initiated the project to fill a gap in the market, aiming to provide a high-performance, affordable alternative to the repurposed tennis shoes that currently dominate the category.
Key Features and Development Goals
The development process focused on finding a balance between speed, stability, and comfort. By working with a dedicated shoe engineering firm, 11SIX24 aimed to create a product that avoids the common pitfalls of being either too heavy or too flimsy. Key aspects of the upcoming footwear include:
- Performance-Focused Design: The shoes are engineered to be lightweight and quick, similar to a speed shoe, while maintaining significant cushioning for comfort.
- Lateral Stability: The design incorporates a shank to provide necessary support during side-to-side movements, though it is intentionally not made of stiff carbon fiber to ensure the shoe remains flexible.
- Strategic Pricing: The company plans to retail the shoes between $120 and $140, positioning them as a more accessible option compared to premium performance models that often exceed $180.
- Six-Month Warranty: Responding to direct feedback from the pickleball community, 11SIX24 will offer a six-month warranty on the footwear.
- Refined Fit: After facing significant challenges with foot shape variations—including issues with toe pinching and improper width—the company underwent four or five major revisions to finalize a fit that accommodates a broad range of players.
The path to production was not without difficulty; Groechel admitted that developing footwear proved to be significantly more complex than manufacturing paddles, nearly leading him to abandon the project at one point. However, with the production version now approved, the company is moving forward with manufacturing.
The shoes are expected to arrive in the 11SIX24 warehouse by late March 2027, with an official launch scheduled for April 2027. The debut collection will feature several colorways, including black, white, teal, lavender, and a vibrant Miami-inspired design. While Groechel views this initial release as a starting point for future iterations, he sees the move into footwear as a vital step in expanding the brand's presence and awareness on pickleball courts nationwide.
